About halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa, directly on the Mediterranean Sea, lies the ancient site of Caesarea Maritima. The city of Caesarea was founded in 63 BC by the Roman governor Herod. Caesarea was an influential and wealthy city for almost six centuries, starting in 70 AD. even the capital of the Roman province of Palestine. While visiting this archaeological site, I discovered a tunnel that leads from the bathhouses directly into the light of the Mediterranean Sea. This special photo was taken here: The play of light in the tunnel and the extreme contrast draw the viewer into the picture and captivate his gaze.
