As early as 1923, Tempelhof Airport began scheduled flights - making it one of the first commercial airports in Germany. Tempelhof became famous because of the airlift. During the blockade of West Berlin between June 1948 and May 1949, the planes known as "raisin bombers" supplied the cordoned-off part of the city with goods. One of these American transport aircraft, a Douglas C-54 Skymaster Troop Carrier 5557, is still standing on the apron today. The total length of the arch-shaped part of the building is about 1.2 kilometres - making it still one of the longest buildings in Europe.
